You don't have to struggle any longer to come up with the right words in you next thank you note. Use my template instead!Happy New Year everyone! I hope your holidays were as wonderful as mine. Before Christmas, we talked about how to give the perfect gift and I was thinking that the best way to follow up would be how to thank someone for giving you a gift. In this day and age, because everything is done online and through email, I rarely receive snail mail that isn’t someone asking for money. When I do get something else, I do a little happy dance on the inside. I suppose that’s why I like the holidays so much, because so many cards come and go. 🙂 I am sure that the gifts you received this year were spectacular! So spectacular, in fact, that you want to write the kindest, most heartfelt thank you note you possibly can so you can get it in the mail ASAP! Okay, okay, maybe that is a bit of an exaggeration (or not!) but you are here, nonetheless, to figure out how. Yay! You go Glen Coco!

First things first, I keep a stack of thank you cards in my desk at all times so I never have a reason not to write a quick thank you note. Personally, anytime anyone goes way out of their way to do something for me or gives me a gift, I write a thank you note. It makes me happy writing them, and I’d like to think it makes the recipient happy when they receive it. 🙂

 Start With A Greeting

Whether it be a more formal thank you note, or a more casual one, you always start with the greeting. You want to include everyone who was a part of the “giving team”. For example, if John and Jane Smith gave you a crockpot for your wedding, open with both of their names in the greeting. If the gift was from an entire family, then you can say “________ and family”. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy.

Thank you for the gift

When writing your thank you note, get to the point. The average size of a thank you note is 3 X 5 if you buy them in a pack, or 5 X 7 if you buy individually, and that’s not a ton of space. The most important reason for writing the thank you note is to thank the giver for the gift, so take care of that first. Be descriptive. Is there something about the gift you like the most? Tell them! For example, your crockpot has become a highly utilized kitchen item and has made dinner prep very convenient after spending those long hours at the office. If dear Aunt Fae gave you money and you don’t feel comfortable writing “Thanks for the moolah dude!” in your note, then you can say something like “Thank you so much for your generous gift!” and go on to tell her how it will help you with a future project. For example, “I can’t wait to use the money to help finish our basement”.

Thank you for your friendship

One of the most important parts of a heartfelt thank you note, in my opinion, is thanking someone for their friendship. This will let them know that having them in your life is just as, if not more than, any gift they could ever give you. You could say something like, “I am truly blessed to have such a wonderful friend like you in my life.” If you are going to see them soon, you can mention that in your thank you note as well. If not, let them know you are thinking about them and can’t wait to plan a get together. Bonus points to anyone who throws some get together ideas in their card 😉

Thank you for everything

When closing, restate your thanks and add details to thank them in a different way. This is a great time to expand on how their gift will benefit you or your family. For example, the crockpot that John and Jane gave you for your wedding has saved you a ton of money, time and sanity because you are now hooked on making crockpot freezer meals. You can tell Aunt Fae that you’re creating the perfect retreat for her for the next time she comes to visit you. Now she won’t have to worry about finding a place to stay! When closing, I like to use phrases like “With love, many thanks, yours truly, thank you again, etc” because they are much more personal than “regards or sincerely”.

    • Hi Tamara!

Thank you so much for your kind words! I’m so glad you were able to create the Thank You notes you’ve been wanting to. This has been quite a year and sending out thank yous or just little notes is a fun way to reconnect with those closest in ways other than on social media. There’s just something about getting a handwritten note in the mail that always makes me smile!

      I hope you have a wonderful 2021!

      Danielle
